Do I have to go on a tour or can I go by myself?
Yes you have to go on a tour to be able to see the set.

What is the difference between the tour from Matamata, TSR (The Shires Rest) & Rotorua?
It is the same tour however they are different pick up locations. The tour from Rotorua is twice a day and is more expensive than from Matamata or TSR (The Shires Rest) because of the distance.

Do I need to book in advance?
Yes, due to demand you should always book in advance. This can be via internet or telephone. If you would like to be picked up from Rotorua you need to book at least 12 hours in advance.

What is the Sheep Farm Experience?
We no longer offer the sheep farm experience however you will still get the chance to feed the pet sheep and bottle feed the lambs.

Are they still filming?
Filming at the Hobbiton Movie Set has finished and tours are running as normal.

Can I stay in any of the Hobbit Holes?
The Hobbit Holes are exterior only and you cannot enter (or stay) in them.

Is there much to see?
The set has been completely rebuilt for the filming of The Hobbit movies in 2011, they set will remain how it was seen in the films. There are 44 unique hobbit holes, the Green Dragon Pub, Mill, double arched bridge and the famous Party Tree.

What is the difference between a normal tour and a private tour?
A private tour can be undertaken with an individual tour guide and at a time to suit within your tour itinerary. There is no minimum number of clients but there is a maximum of eleven. The tour needs to be booked in advance so we can reserve your own tour guide.

What facilities are available for disabled visitors?
We offer a 50% discount for people in wheelchairs as there are some areas of the set that can’t be accessed due to steep terrain and stairs etc.
We recommend people in wheelchairs to drive directly to the Shires Rest and take the tour from there to avoid changing buses.

Is there plenty of parking at The Shires Rest?
Yes, we have ample parking available for all vehicles.
